The upper part of the relatively flat glacier field is also called Plateau d'Hérens and lies south-east of Evolène. The glacier is flanked by the Dent Blanche (4357m). In the days of ancient Rome, this well-travelled mule path led from Val d'Hérens to Valpelline on the Italian side of the Alps. Partial vestiges of this high-alpine route are still visible today.
